Mama Africa's Final Collection of her Best Songs |
|
Known throughout the world as Mama Africa, Miriam Makeba is a legend
who lived an extraordinary life. Born in South Africa in 1932, she first made
her name as a featured vocalist with the Manhattan Brothers in 1954. Makeba's
incredible voice won her the lead role in
King Kong, a Broadway-inspired South African musical, together with Hugh
Masekela, her future husband. She went on to conquer America where she sang at
President Kennedy's birthday and worked with Harry Belafonte creating classics
such as The Click Song and Pata Pata. In 1963, after testifying against apartheid before the United Nations,
Makeba was exiled. In 1968, she married Black
Panther leader Stokely Carmichael and they fled to Guinea. Makeba
returned to prominence when she performed with Paul Simon on 1987's Graceland
tour. Her 2000 album Homeland was
Grammy nominated. Finally in the late 1980's she returned to her homeland as a
free South African and continued to tour, perform and thrill audiences
worldwide until her recent death. African Cream Music is deeply saddened by the
passing of Miriam Makeba of a heart attack on 09/11/08 in Italy.
The carefully compiled collection, Miriam Makeba: The Legend, the last made
before her untimely death, is unique in that it consists of Makeba's best
tracks from the early years through to her most recent songs- finally all
together on one album. Share in the special journey of a musical icon whose
mystique, beauty and voice are timeless.
